The continent named as 'Mauritia,' is located below the island Mauritius.According to reports the continent is a part of ancient gondwanaland, a giant continent existed 200 mn years ago. Gondawanaland broke in to 5 pieces that are now called as Africa, South America, Antarctica, India and Australia.
Professor Lewis Ashwal, lead author of the paper, says "This breakup did not involve a simple splitting of the ancient super-continent of Gondwana but a complex splintering took place with fragments of continental crust of variable sizes left adrift within the evolving Indian Ocean basin."
The discovery was made after analyzing a mineral called zircon that found in rocks spewed up by lava during volcanic eruptions.
"Mauritius is an island, and there is no rock older than 9 million years old on the island," says Ashwal. But by studying rocks on this new continent, they found zircons that are 3 billion years old.
Our research made it possible to discover the 8th continent of the world which otherwise may have lost forever without leaving any trace of its existence for over 3Bn years.
"The fact that we have found zircons of this age proves that there are much older crustal materials under Mauritius, which is a sign that there could be more hidden continents in this vast ocean" said Ashwal.
