This is a brilliant quote from Siddhartha Gutama (AKA Buddha). This quote is supposed to have occurred around 2500 years ago.

This was Buddha’s response to a question by a tribal clan asking who could they trust among the countless wandering holy men passing through their land.

Buddha’s answer encourages free inquiry and warns against blind faith.

Advice From 2,000 Years Ago Buddha On The Art of Critical Thinking

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
― Gautama Buddha

  1. My Vipassana teacher S N Goenka says something very similar in one of his discourses, presumably based on that passage. There is no element of faith in the Buddha's teaching, he taught a technique by which each one of us can understand the nature of the universe by observing it with detachment as it manifests in our own minds and bodies from moment to moment and, through this process, free ourselves from suffering.
